Role - Set Designer
Venue - Criterion Theatre (Speculative)
After having the opportunity to design a set earlier in my college course, I chose to do it again in an optional unit that year. For this unit, I picked the play Red because I found the text interesting and saw potential to develop my model making skills.
During my research, I was able to see the actual paintings that the play was about at the Tate Britain. This allowed me to get a greater sense of the feeling I had to try and create through my design. It also helped to be able to look through the wealth of information on Mark Rothko on the internet as well. A documentary called "The Silence of Mark Rothko" helped me understand a lot more about his character.
To create the model box for this production I had to learn a lot more about model making because of how much more complex it was. This included learning about creating brickwork and wooden flooring. I'm so glad I took the time to do this, as I think the finished product is done to a high standard
The design itself is not meant to be as busy as a regular art studio because I wanted it to focus on the two main characters and their dialogue, rather than having too many distractions around them. This also impacted my choice of theatre to be quite a small theatre space where people are close to the stage and feel like they're more immersed with the story.
